When Sucheta Bhide decided to create a reading nook in her new home in 2014, she had no idea that her search for a shiny side table would actually lead her to launch The Resplendent Crow – her illustrious lacquer furniture business that has basically made vintage go viral.
“There weren’t a lot of options for high-gloss vintage type furniture that I was excited about,” Bhide says. “I found a table in one of the local antique malls and said, ‘Guess I’ll paint it shiny. I started researching glossy paint and kind of went down to that rabbit hole.
Bhide says she was so excited about her results that she also painted a dresser for her bedroom.
“I was like, ‘Wow, I really like that,'” Bhide recalls. “I guess I’ll paint more furniture. I bought a compressor, then I did all kinds of R&D and started spraying furniture out of my garage.
Although she initially listed furniture on Craigslist, she quickly switched to Etsy, where she sold her first finished piece of furniture: a French provincial bedroom set.
“Someone from Casper, Wyoming, asked about this article, and I was like, ‘I don’t even know where Wyoming is, forget about Casper,’ said Bhide from India. laughing. “But she wanted to buy the part, and I thought, ‘I have no idea. So I did some research to send it to him.
Bhide says the shipping charge alone was $ 500, but the client was sold on the shelf.
“She was thrilled with the play,” Bhide says. “She thought it was beautiful. I realized there was a market for this very shiny vintage piece of furniture. Next thing I know is that he went from my garage to a little 1,000 square foot warehouse, which I very quickly passed, and walked into a 10,000 square foot warehouse, that I quickly passed. So basically it snowballed, and it just got bigger and bigger. “
